"Sleep Suit" from Ford simulates experience of drowsy drivers

March 15 was designated as World Sleep Day. For this day, Ford highlighted the dangers of drowsy driving through a special "Sleep Suit" that provides individuals with a simulation of what lack of sleep does to drivers' cognitive abilities. Drowsiness is a major factor in 1 in 5 road accidents in Pennsylvania and throughout the U.S., and being awake for 18 hours or more can lead to the same level of impairment as that produced by alcohol intoxication.

Dangerous signs that a driver may be drunk

Many people in Pennsylvania are concerned about encountering a drunk driver on the road. When people consume alcohol to the point of intoxication, they may be unable to drive safely. Every year, many serious and even fatal auto accidents are caused by drunk drivers, especially repeated drunk drivers who frequently drive over the legal limit. However, people can take action to protect themselves, even when they encounter dangerous drivers on the road.

Drunk driving causes more than 10,000 deaths per year

In 2016, over 500 people died as the result of a drunk driver in Pennsylvania, and across the country, over 10,000 people lost their lives in an accident involving a drunk driver. Though drunk driving has decreased slightly over the years, enough people die each year for it to be considered an epidemic. People who are at a higher risk of drunk driving include young people under the age of 24, those who have been previously convicted for drunk driving and motorcyclists.

External airbags may reduce injuries and fatalities

ZF has developed external airbags that could reduce the number of injuries from car accidents for car occupants in Pennsylvania and across the world. The new external airbags have been found to reduce injury severity by the vehicle's occupants up to 40 percent. Developers hope that installing the devices in new vehicles can reduce injuries and fatalities from car accidents.

Car accidents may be handled as criminal cases

Pennsylvania drivers would probably say they do all they can to avoid a car crash. By nature, most crashes are unintentional. Many car accidents do not require much investigation, and the matter can be quickly resolved. Recently, an unusual accident that resulted in death has authorities suspecting the accident was intentional.

Car accidents involving school buses on the rise

Pennsylvania residents might find themselves alarmed as they continue to see news stories where school buses have been involved in crashes. Several have occurred in the state already this year, and the fear that buses continue to be involved in car accidents have many parents concerned. Many families rely on buses to get children to and from school each day, and each moment a bus is on the road is a moment that children are potentially in danger. The latest crash resulted in fatality.

Car accidents resulting in death continue to plague PA roads

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation recently had to close a portion of Route 322 because two crashes occurred on the same stretch within hours of each other. The car accidents appear to be unrelated, but at least one resulted in fatality. Police continue to investigate both crashes, and details have emerged about the first of the crashes, which resulted in death and injuries suffered.
